About Department

Introduction

The Department of Pharmacology was established in the year 2019 with an intent of imparting quality education for both undergraduate and post-graduates. It deals with scientific study of drugs and their effects on living systems and forms the backbone of rational therapeutics. Currently the department runs 5 programs MBBS, MD, B Sc (Nursing), MSc (Medical Pharmacology), and PhD.

The department of Pharmacology, AIIMS, Nagpur is recognized as an ADR monitoring center under Pharmacovigilance Program of India and holds the Institutional Ethics Committee (IEC) cell (Registered with CDSCO & DHR) within the department with HoD Pharmacology being the member secretary. The department holds its reputation among the undergraduate students for engaging them in active/interactive ways of teaching-learning like role play, debate, seminar, problem-based learning (PBL), Case based learning (CBL). The department has the state-of-the-art museum containing various dosage forms, 2-D models, and charts. The unique feature of museum is that the relevant information about the dosage forms, graphs& ADRs can be obtained by scanning the QR codes.

The department also has an interactive (smart) board and computer assisted learning (CAL) lab, for facilitating the ICT enabled learning. Also, the department has purchased the Isolated organ Bath- 1 Model- Power lab 26T Data Acquisition system, Hand steadiness Tester and Digital Elevated plus Maze.They will help not only for postgraduate teaching but facilitate research also. The faculty from the department are actively involved in doing academic research and are regularly invited as resource persons for workshops within or outside the organization.

Pharmacovigilance and materiovigilance services, drug information services, therapeutic drug monitoring, antimicrobial stewardship, Management of medications as a part DTC, clinical trial, and ethics in research/drug development, pharmacogenetics

Pharmacovigilance

The Department of Pharmacology is recognized as an ADR monitoring center under Pharmacovigilance Program of India since February 2021. The AMC conducts regular training programs and outreach activities including role play, nukkad naatak as part of the celebration of “Pharmacovigilance week”.

Clinical trial (Drug development) and ethics in research

Institutional Ethics Committee (IEC) cell (Registered with CDSCO & DHR) is located within the department with HoD Pharmacology being the member secretary. The Department of Pharmacology, in collaboration with IEC, regularly conducts the Good Clinical Practice (GCP) workshops. Till date 5 offline workshops at AIIMS, Nagpur and many online GCP workshops are conducted by the Department, under the abled leadership Dr Ganesh Dakhale, member secretary IEC and Head, Department of Pharmacology, AIIMS, Nagpur. To date, 49 regulatory (sponsored) trials have been reviewed and approved by the IEC. Recently, the IEC underwent NABH assessment and has been “Accredited” under the Ethics Committee Accreditation Program of NABH

Antimicrobial stewardship

The Department faculty are part of the hospital infection control committee and also part of PTC, Kayakalpa feedback committee. The faculty are doing the stewardship rounds and doing the audit and providing the feedback. Also, doing the training on antimicrobial stewardship and judicious use of antimicrobial agents.

Drug information services

Drug related information required by physicians, other health care professionals and including patients is provided by the faculty of department of pharmacology.

AIIMS Nagpur MOU with Pfizer: Department of Pharmacology has entered a memorandum of understanding with Pfizer, India for the PG internship at the industry and to create the opportunity for clinical trials to be held at AIIMS, Nagpur

Research and Grants: Faculty carry out both basic and clinical research. They guide undergraduates and postgraduates. Faculty have carried out projects funded by Indian Council of Medical Research and internal funded projects.
